Cwrt Canna is an award-winning £3.4 million development of 13 highly energy efficient homes.
The 4 x one-bedroom apartments, 8 x two- and three-bedroom houses and 1 x two-bedroom bungalow were built to resemble a collection of farm buildings, set around a central courtyard space.
Built by Approved Contractor Canna Developments for Newydd Housing Association, Cwrt Canna is an award-winning social housing development in Llangan, Wales. The scheme was recognised as ‘Best Affordable Housing Development (under £5 million)’ at the Inside Housing Development Awards 2022 and also won ‘Delivering High Quality Homes’ at the Welsh Housing Awards. Designed to raise living standards, the development comprises highly energy-efficient Passivhaus homes, modelled using PHPP and constructed around a sustainable timber frame. These homes provide consistent comfort, eliminate issues such as damp and mould, and use MVHR systems to deliver a continuous supply of clean, filtered fresh air—helping to reduce energy costs and tackle fuel poverty.
The project also delivered significant social value. A prisoner rehabilitation scheme with HMP Parc and HMP Prescoed enabled individuals to fabricate timber modules, leading to employment opportunities, with several participants securing ongoing roles. In addition, apprenticeship opportunities supported those who lost placements during the pandemic.

As soon as you drive through the village of Llangan your head turns to look at our striking housing development. There is certainly a wow factor about Cwrt Canna and that is down to the hard work of our development team alongside all our contractors. It hasn’t been an easy process building this scheme during a global pandemic, but it has been worth it to see the joy in the faces of our tenants. Each tenant beams when you speak to them about the difference their new home will make to their lives, and this is what drives us on each day. Some of our tenants have had a difficult few years, but now with their energy efficient homes in beautiful surroundings they tell us that they cannot wait to see what the future brings. I am incredibly proud of what has been achieved at Cwrt Canna.”
